MANILA – Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said the coup plot against him has nothing to do with his strong stance against the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.
“In fairness to its sponsors, they are all mature. I think there are some people who are no longer happy about me being the Senate President,” said Enrile, who had been accused earlier of derailing the passage of the proposed legislation.
Both senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada maintained that the 88-year-old lawmaker still has their support should the alleged Senate coup push through.
“There are always people who are unhappy with the leadership of anybody. I am always expecting that. Every day, I am expecting to be relieved. It is not easy to please everyone in the Senate. If they are discontented with me, I do not know. It’s okay,” Enrile said.
Lacson said the alleged coup may no longer materialize as it is already “out in the open.”
“When everyone knows about it, it will spoil the element of surprise. It will fail,” the former police general said.
He added, “I helped install Senate President Enrile in the last Congress. Why would I participate in a plot to oust him? That’s out of character.”
For his part, the son of former President Joseph Estrada pointed out that he does not see any reason to oust Enrile.
“He always offers an unbiased opinion,” he said.
Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon previously said he is not aware of any “leadership change” in the Upper House.
“If there is any move, I am not part of it. I deny that. I am not talking to anyone.”/PN
