U.S.-made anti-Mohammad film defended

Thursday, September 13, 2012
Police clash with protesters near the U.S. embassy in Egypt, as anger mounts in the Arab world in response to an American-made film that mocks the Prophet Mohammad.

Demonstrations - some violent - have erupted in countries across the region - including in Libya where the U.S. Ambassador was killed along with three consular workers. The origins of the crudely-made film are murky. But Californian Steven Klein, says he worked as an advisor for it.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FILM ADVISOR AND CONSULTANT STEVEN KLEIN: "If I talked to you about this movie would you go out and kill anybody? No. Would the vast majority of Muslims do it? No.

Would a very small fraction whose DNA, genomes, their psyche, everything revolves around this insane behaviour, would they do it? Yeah. They would do it. Do I have blood on my hands, no. Did I kill his guy? No." Klein said he was an expert on Islam and his role was to ensure the film's accuracy.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FILM ADVISOR AND CONSULTANT STEVEN KLEIN: "I said if you make a lousy movie, with wooden actors who act like idiots - which they did in the movie - that's one thing. But you've got to tell the truth. And that's all I care about.

I gotta get the truth' So I did that for him, That was my sole amount of consulting. Then when I was done he said 'will you be my spokesman if this should catch on' and I said 'Yeah I'll be your spokesman.' " A U.S. activist group says Klein is a Christian with ties to right-wing extremists, a charge the man himself denies.
